The Character and Benefits of Godly Sorrow - Part 2

This post continues the topic of the character of godly sorrow.

Godly sorrow is vital in order to move forward. It is necessary and cannot be skipped, ignored or pushed aside. Even though it is of utmost importance, it does not gloat or boast or get any pleasure from its necessity. It is resolute and firm but not forceful or obnoxious. Its function and effects are essential but it operates through love not by pride or accusation.

2 Corinthians 7:9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.

Godly sorrow doesn't bust its way in but is solidly and responsibly present. It takes no pleasure in misdeeds and seeks to fulfill its purposes without blaming and without causing damage. It is a healing agent. It is a mechanism that is established by our Father to offer help and promote wholeness.

2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

One of the functions of godly sorrow is to stir up, blend in or incorporate repentance into the process. Simply stated, repentance is a change of the mind and heart and this change leads to salvation. Salvation is a free gift from God that includes eternal life. The season of godly sorrow is a period or space of purpose, a step in the right direction. It should be welcomed not dreaded or avoided. Natural or the basic sorrow of humanity has no spiritual benefit. It can become a trap designed to suck a person under to suffocate them until there is no more life. Fleshly or worldly sorrow is steeped in hopelessness and leads to death.

Godly sorrow is a progressive necessity that is easily recognized and is to be learned from and appreciated. Without this part of the process a person will keep moving from one ill act to another, layering their life with sludge. Sludge is a greasy, dirty build up of matter that inhibits flow. It contaminates EVERYTHING that goes through it.

2 Corinthians 7:11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge!

Godly sorrow encourages and teaches caution, keeps guilt from setting in, fosters a clean heart and establishes resistance and alarms against the same or similar offences. It builds respect, strengthens determination against wrong doing and rekindles a passion for the things of God. It develops awareness and desire to live fully for the Lord, not straddling the fence or living on the edge of godliness so close to the world that a slight breeze would send you tumbling across the dividing line. The work of godly sorrow weakens the enemy's camp and strengthens the Kingdom of God. There is no plausible (reasonable, credible, believable) debate against the power and effectiveness of godly sorrow.
