What Does He Require?

In the scripture verses that follow the Lord is very specific about what He requires. The comparison between His directives and what is sometimes called "ministry" today is vastly different.

Jeremiah 22

1 Thus saith the Lord; Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and speak there this word,

And say, Hear the word of the Lord, O king of Judah, that sittest upon the throne of David, thou, and thy servants, and thy people that enter in by these gates:

Thus saith the Lord; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.

As followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, we are all kings and priests. We have the responsibility of ruling and serving. So this word of instruction applies to all of us. We don't all rule in the same sphere. But we all have a circle of influence and we are to rule and serve in that realm.

The ways in which we live and minister should represent the characteristics and values that are important to the Lord. We should be offended by injustice just like He is. We should have a heart for righteousness just like He does.

13 Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;

14 That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion.

The goal of ministry is not to line one's own pockets with gold. Ministry is not a "me-minded" vocation. Ministry is designed to refute evil and point people to Jesus. Those who want to please God must seek Him to find out what His will is. Then seek Him about how to execute what He wants done. Ministry or serving is more about giving than getting.

Jeremiah 23

21 I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.

22 But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.

23 Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off?

24 Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord.

Ministry is designed to help multitudes not just a few. On some occasions when Jesus ministered everyone who touched Him was made whole (Mark 6:56). When Peter preached in Acts 2 the 41st verse tells us that 3,000 were added to the family of Christ. In Acts 4:34 we see that none of followers lacked. Distribution was made so that everyone had what they needed. What a magnificent way to live! What happened that somewhere along the way Singular Excess became the definition of Success? How is it that a few have so much more than is needed for everyday living while many, many others are stricken by poverty?

What does the Lord require? He requires justice, righteousness, equity and love.
