Say What??? - Part 1

Most people take the ability to speak for granted. It is a gift from God and I am certain He rarely receives appropriate appreciation for it. Unless a person has experiemced some type of trauma that drastically affected the speaking mechanism, the majority of the population hardly gives it a thought. Perhaps those who have suffered a stroke or some injury that resulted in vocal paralysis give more thought than the average person does to verbal communication.

It is my contention that much of the world's population believes that the ability to speak is a right rather than a responsibility. The words I am sometimes assaulted with from a sound system in the vehicle next to me at a stop light, lets me know some people believe they have a RIGHT to say whatever filth comes to mind.

Everything God made has a purpose. When something is used outside of God's purpose to please, satisfy or glorify man it is MISUSE and ABUSE. What makes people use language as an assault weapon against themselves and other people? Because they lack wisdom, they lack understanding and they are void of discipline.

1. Wisdom knows the God-inspired power and purpose of words.

2. Understanding realizes the blessings and cursings that may result from operating within or without that wisdom.

3. Discipline is a permanent harness required to instruct the human tongue.

Let's look closer at the first truth: Wisdom knows the God-ordained power and purpose of words.

Luke 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. KJV

This passage is part of the narrative told by Luke of the encounter between Jesus and the devil in the wilderness. The devil is attempting to get Jesus to transfer His focus from pleasing the Father to pleasing Himself. One of the ways Jesus resists and refutes the devil's tactics is through declaring the scriptures. This first declaration from our Lord lets us know that the right words give us life. Without the word of God shaping, developing and permeating a person's life they only have a shell of an existence. There can be no true fullnes apart from Him. Fullness refers to being satisfied. His word delivers a satisfaction that banishes emptiness and voids. He offers eternal vitality that cannot be enjoyed without ingesting and digesting His word. It has to become a part of you.

In John 6:63 Jesus says, It is the Spirit Who gives life;...the flesh conveys no benefit whatever...The words that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life. AMP

We also learn from what Jesus said that in order to know what the Word says, we have to KNOW what the WORD says! When Jesus spoke in Luke 4:4 it was from Deuteronomy 8:3. Jesus studied. How could I quote great orators if I never read their work? In 2 Timothy 2:15 the Apostle Paul reminded young Timothy to study. Not to study just so he could pass an exam like so many people do. But study to demonstrate to God (not to people) that he was an approved workman of the word. Study to let the Father know that you value what He says. Study so He sees that you have an accelerated interest in His precepts and statutes. Study so you become an ardent, diligent, serious knower and doer of the word. Study to become practiced and skillful in the word. Study so you know how to live in a manner that pleases the Father: the Giver of Life and Speech.

Chew on this awhile and we'll share more next time!
